Sheffield Unity March: route and rally details for Saturday 24 October

Sheffield’s Unity March will gather at Devonshire Green at 11.30am on Saturday 24 October. Participants will walk through the city centre to Barkers Pool, with speeches and music on the steps of City Hall.

Hundreds are expected to join the demonstration against racism and the far right, according to The Star. More than 50 organisations across South Yorkshire are backing it.

Organiser Sheffield Stand Up to Racism says the event responds to a recent march through Darnall by the right-wing group Patriot Platform. A spokesperson said the aim was to celebrate the region’s multi-racial communities and reject division.

The event’s poster lists support from trade unions, campaigns and political parties. Those named include Unite, the TUC, the NHS, Sheffield Labour and the Green Party.

Sheffield Stand Up to Racism also pointed to recent Patriot Platform appearances in Sheffield and Doncaster, where it had helped organise counter-demonstrations. Its spokesperson described black-clad individuals entering Darnall, some in balaclavas and others wearing camouflage face paint, and said their presence was intended to intimidate residents.
